As a teen he was in trouble with the law. In rehab, someone handed him a programming book. That changed everything.
As a teenager in Canada, Dan Martell was in serious trouble. Drugs, group homes and run ins with the law.
Then, in a rehab program, he discovered computer programming.
That skill led him to build and sell three tech companies, and later coach thousands of software founders.
A troubled start in New Brunswick
Dan Martell grew up in New Brunswick, Canada. He has spoken openly about substance abuse, living in group homes and being arrested several times as a teen.
At a treatment centre called Portage Atlantic, he started learning to code. For the first time, he found something he could focus on for hours.
Building and selling
Dan became a software developer and entrepreneur. He built and sold Spheric Technologies, then co-founded Flowtown, a social marketing tool that was acquired in 2011.
Next he built Clarity.fm, a marketplace where people pay experts for short advice calls. It was acquired in 2015.
He also became an angel investor in startups like Intercom and Udemy.
SaaS Academy and Buy Back Your Time
In 2016, Dan started SaaS Academy, a coaching program for software company founders.
In 2023, he published Buy Back Your Time, a book about hiring help and delegating so founders can focus on what matters most. It became a bestseller.
Where he is now
Today, Dan Martell runs SaaS Academy and Martell Ventures and shares business advice with a large online audience.
