Many of them have never heard the name Erik Cassel. But without him, Roblox might never have existed.
An engineer who loved building
Erik Cassel was born in 1967. He became a software engineer who loved making tools that let people create.
He worked at Knowledge Revolution, the company David Baszucki co-founded, which made Interactive Physics software for students. Erik led engineering work there.
The two men noticed how much students loved building and experimenting inside the software. That spark stayed with them.
Co-founding Roblox
In 2004, Erik and David started working on a new idea: an online world where anyone could build using simple blocks and real physics, and share their creations.
Erik was Roblox's co-founder and vice president of engineering. He helped build the engine and tools at the heart of the platform. Roblox launched in 2006.
He was known for being friendly and active in the Roblox community, playing and talking with players under his account.
A loss for the community
In February 2013, Erik Cassel died of cancer at age 45.
The Roblox community mourned him. Players built tributes inside the game, and the company has honoured his memory over the years.
The legacy
After Erik's death, Roblox kept growing. In 2021, it went public on the New York Stock Exchange. Today it has tens of millions of daily users and a huge economy of young creators.
The platform Erik helped engineer became one of the most important creative spaces for a generation.
