In 2021, the founder of one of the world's most valuable startups announced he was stepping down.
He did not pick a famous outsider to replace him. He picked his old college friend.
That friend was Liang Rubo. Today he runs ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, Douyin and China's most popular AI chatbot.
Nankai University
Liang Rubo studied at Nankai University in Tianjin, China. There he met Zhang Yiming, and the two became close friends. They are often described as former college roommates.
After college, Liang worked as an engineer in the tech industry, including at a property search website where Zhang also worked.
Starting ByteDance
In 2012, Zhang founded ByteDance in a Beijing apartment. Liang was there from the start as a co-founder.
While Zhang focused on products and strategy, Liang built the company from the inside. He led human resources and helped shape how ByteDance hired and organised its people as it grew to tens of thousands of employees.
Taking the top job
In 2021, Zhang announced he would step down as CEO. He said Liang would take over. The handover was completed in 2021, and Liang later also became chairman.
Hard years
Liang became CEO at a tough time. China's government was cracking down on big tech companies. In the United States, pressure to ban or sell TikTok kept growing.
Liang kept a low profile and steadied the company. In January 2026, ByteDance closed a deal handing majority control of TikTok's U.S. business to American investors, keeping a 19.9 percent stake.
The AI bet
Under Liang, ByteDance went all in on artificial intelligence. Its Doubao chatbot grew into China's most popular AI app in early 2026. The company spent billions on AI chips and data centres.
In June 2026, Liang reportedly told staff at an all hands meeting that a stock market listing was not on the table for now.
Where he is now
Today, Liang Rubo is co-founder, CEO and chairman of ByteDance. He oversees Douyin, Toutiao, CapCut, the Doubao AI models and TikTok outside the United States.
Why the story matters
Liang Rubo's story shows that not every founder needs the spotlight. For years he built the teams that made ByteDance work. When the moment came, he was trusted to lead.
For young builders, the lesson is simple. Culture and people are as important as the product. And loyalty and steady work can put you in the top seat.
