The Shy Coder Who Connected 1.4 Billion People
He wrote pager software in Shenzhen. He built a chat app with a penguin logo. Then WeChat changed daily life in China.
In China, people use one app to chat with friends, pay for dumplings, book a taxi, see a doctor and play games.
That app is WeChat. It belongs to Tencent, the company Pony Ma co-founded in 1998.
Pony is famously quiet. But his products are used by more than a billion people every day.
Stargazing in Shantou
Ma Huateng, known in English as Pony Ma, was born in 1971 in Shantou, Guangdong province, China. As a child he loved astronomy and dreamed about the stars.
When he was a boy, his family moved to Shenzhen, a small city that was about to explode into one of China's biggest tech hubs.
Learning to code
Pony studied computer science at Shenzhen University and graduated in 1993.
He then worked at a telecom company, writing software for pagers, small devices that showed short messages before mobile phones were common.
Tencent and the penguin
In November 1998, Pony and four friends founded Tencent in Shenzhen.
In 1999, they launched a free chat program called OICQ. It was later renamed QQ, with a cute penguin mascot. Young people across China loved it.
But free apps cost money to run. In the early days, Tencent struggled so much that the founders reportedly tried to sell QQ, and could not find a buyer. International investors, including South Africa's Naspers, stepped in to help.
In 2004, Tencent listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Games and WeChat
Tencent learned to make money from virtual items, online games and services inside QQ. It became one of the world's biggest video game companies, later owning Riot Games, the maker of League of Legends.
In 2011, Tencent launched WeChat, known in China as Weixin. It started as a messaging app and grew into a "super app" with payments, mini programs and much more.
Where he is now
Today, Pony Ma is co-founder, chairman and CEO of Tencent. WeChat has about 1.4 billion users. In 2026, he is focused on bringing Tencent's Hunyuan AI models into its apps and games.
Why the story matters
Pony Ma's story shows that you do not need to be loud to lead. He focused on building products people use every day, and kept improving them.
For young builders, the lesson is simple. Start with a simple tool people love, like chatting with friends, and keep adding what they need.
He did not build an app. He built a daily habit for a nation.
