He was chief engineer of the Model S. Then he built a car that went even further. Meet Peter Rawlinson.
Most electric cars make a trade. More range means a bigger, heavier battery.
Peter Rawlinson hated that trade. He believed the answer was efficiency: smaller motors, smarter design, less wasted energy.
He proved it twice. First as chief engineer of the Tesla Model S. Then as CEO of Lucid Motors, whose Lucid Air became one of the longest range electric cars ever sold.
A British engineer
Peter Rawlinson is British. He studied mechanical engineering at Imperial College London.
He built his career at famous car companies, including Jaguar and Lotus, where he worked on advanced engineering and car design.
Chief engineer of the Model S
In 2009, Peter joined Tesla as vice president of engineering and chief engineer of the Model S. The Model S launched in 2012 and changed what people thought an electric car could be.
He left Tesla in 2012. Years later, he publicly pushed back when Elon Musk downplayed his role.
From batteries to Lucid
In 2013, Peter joined a battery technology startup called Atieva as chief technology officer. In 2016 it renamed itself Lucid Motors and set out to build its own luxury electric car.
It was a hard road. Money ran short. Then Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund invested heavily, and Peter became CEO in 2019.
The Lucid Air
In 2021, Lucid began delivering the Lucid Air. Its range reached 520 miles on a single charge, a record for an EV at the time.
The secret was Peter's obsession with efficiency: very compact motors, clever electronics and a smooth shape.
In July 2021, Lucid became a public company on the Nasdaq through a merger with a special purpose company.
Gravity and goodbye
Lucid later revealed the Gravity, a large electric SUV. But the company struggled to make cars in big numbers and lost a lot of money.
In February 2025, Peter stepped down as CEO. He became a strategic technical adviser to Lucid's board chairman, a role that runs until February 2027.
Where he is now
Today, Peter Rawlinson advises Lucid's leadership. He is remembered as one of the most important electric car engineers of his generation.
Why the story matters
Peter Rawlinson's story shows how deep engineering skill can shape an entire industry. The Model S and Lucid Air both raised the bar for electric cars.
It also shows how hard car making is. Great engineering does not guarantee easy business success.
