The Quiet Engineer Who Built TikTok
He rented a small apartment in Beijing. He built an app that learns what you love. Then the whole world started scrolling.
You open TikTok. You watch one video. Then another. An hour later, you are still scrolling.
The app seems to know exactly what you like. That is not magic. It is a recommendation system, and the idea behind it came from a quiet engineer named Zhang Yiming.
He built ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, into one of the most valuable private companies in the world.
A kid from Fujian
Zhang Yiming was born in 1983 in Longyan, in Fujian province, China. His parents worked in government jobs and later ran a small business.
He was curious and loved reading. He chose to study far from home at Nankai University in the city of Tianjin.
He started in microelectronics, then switched to software engineering. At Nankai, he also met a friend who would matter a lot later: Liang Rubo.
Startup after startup
After college, Zhang worked at several tech companies. He joined a travel search startup called Kuxun. He spent a short time at Microsoft in China, and left because he found it too slow. He worked on other startups too, including a property search site.
Each job taught him something about search, data and how people find information.
The apartment in Beijing
In 2012, smartphones were exploding in China. Zhang had a big idea. Instead of people searching for news, what if an app learned what each person liked and brought it to them?
In March 2012, he founded ByteDance in a rented apartment in Zhongguancun, Beijing's tech neighbourhood. Liang Rubo helped him start it.
That August, they launched Toutiao, a news app powered by machine learning. It became a huge hit.
Douyin and TikTok
In September 2016, ByteDance launched Douyin, a short video app for China. A year later came TikTok, its international sister app.
In 2017, ByteDance bought Musical.ly, a lip sync app popular with American teens, for about $1 billion. In 2018 it merged it into TikTok. That gave TikTok a huge jump in the West.
TikTok became one of the most downloaded apps on Earth.
Stepping back
In 2021, Zhang surprised everyone. He announced he would step down as CEO and hand the job to his old college friend, Liang Rubo. He said he was better at ideas than at managing people. Later that year he also stepped down as chairman.
He stayed ByteDance's largest individual shareholder.
The TikTok fight
For years, U.S. politicians worried that TikTok's Chinese ownership was a security risk. A law passed requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok's U.S. business or face a ban.
On January 22, 2026, a deal closed. A new company, TikTok USDS Joint Venture, took over TikTok in the United States. Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX each hold 15 percent. ByteDance kept 19.9 percent.
Where he is now
Today, Zhang Yiming keeps a very low profile. ByteDance has grown even bigger thanks to AI. Its Doubao chatbot became China's most popular AI app in early 2026. A February 2026 share sale reportedly valued ByteDance at about $550 billion.
In 2026, reports named Zhang the richest person in Asia.
Why the story matters
Zhang Yiming saw something early: in a world with endless content, the winner is whoever helps you find what you will love.
He did not build a giant by being loud. He built it by being patient, trying many jobs, and trusting data.
For young builders, the lesson is simple. Every job, even a short one, can teach you what you need for your big idea. And knowing your own strengths, and when to hand over the wheel, is a strength too.
He did not make the videos. He made sure you would see them.
